"A Utah Flora" Digital Download
A Flora is a scientific publication which catalogs, describes, and provides identification keys for the plants of a specific area.
In my opinion, "A Utah Flora" by Stanley Welsh, is the the best local flora I have used. There are simpler ones, such as "A Guide To Rocky Mountain Plants", which I carried with me for years. And there are more technical ones, such as the "Flora of North America", which is great if you already know what you are looking at and need reassurance about modern theories on the way things evolved. But if you want something fairly complete and not too difficult, "A Utah Flora" is the one I would pick.
The only drawback is the it is a bit too large and heavy to bring on every hike. So these days I bring it with me on my phone. The first edition was published electronically in Volume 9 of "Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs" in 1987, and is still available for free download. And while they do provide separate pdf files for each chapter, Magnoliopsida is still too large for easy browsing on my phone. So I have divided the work up by Family, and you can download all the files from the link below.
